LiftMaster vs Chamberlain vs Genie: Montreal-area Opener Buying Guide

Opener choice matters less than people think — until you live with the wrong one. Here's what we actually install in Montreal, Laval and Longueuil homes and why.

Belt drive — the right call when there's a bedroom over the garage Belt-drive openers (LiftMaster 8550W, Chamberlain B6753) run on a reinforced rubber belt instead of a metal chain. They're noticeably quieter — the difference between waking the kids when you leave at 6 AM or not. Slightly more expensive than chain. Worth it if the garage shares a wall or ceiling with a bedroom.

Chain drive — the workhorse Chain-drive openers (LiftMaster 8160W, Chamberlain B970) are louder but rock-solid and cheaper to service. For detached garages and basement-bedroom homes the noise is irrelevant. This is what we install when the budget is tight or the garage is far from living space.

Screw drive — better than its reputation Modern screw-drive openers (Genie SilentMax 1200) use a polymer-lined drive that runs quietly and handles Montreal's temperature swings (-25°C to +30°C) without binding the way older screw drives did. Good middle ground when belt is too pricey and chain is too loud.

Wi-Fi — yes or no? LiftMaster myQ and Genie Aladdin Connect let you open and close the door from your phone, get alerts if it's left open, and grant temporary codes for cleaners or contractors. Worth it if you actually want those features. Skip it if you just want a remote — Wi-Fi adds a small premium and a setup step you'll wrestle with after every router change.

Battery backup — quietly required In 2019 California started requiring battery-backup openers on every new installation. Canada hasn't followed, but if you've ever lost power during a storm and been locked out of your own garage you'll see why we recommend battery backup on every new install regardless. Small add-on, saves one call to us during the next ice storm.

What we don't install Cheap big-box openers — the gears and boards fail in 3–5 years and the parts are sometimes unavailable. We see them on warranty calls all the time. Spend a bit more on a LiftMaster or Genie and it lasts 12–15 years.
