Garage Door Off the Track? Don't Drive Off — Here's Why.

An off-track garage door is one of the most common Montreal-area emergency calls we get — and one of the most commonly made worse by trying to "just close it" before help arrives.

How doors go off-track Three main causes: impact (car bumper, ladder, kids' basketball net), cable failure (a frayed cable finally lets go and the door slips), and worn rollers that finally jump out of a bent track section. After ten Montreal winters with road-salt corrosion, cable failure is the most common cause we see in older houses.

Don't force it back If half the door is off the track and half is still on, do not hit the opener button to try to "shake it back into place". You'll bend more panels, bend the tracks, and possibly snap the still-attached cable. A simple re-seat becomes a panel replacement or a full door swap.

What we actually do We arrive, secure the door manually (clamps on the tracks below the door), inspect cables, drums and tracks for damage from the slip, replace cables in matched pairs if either is damaged, re-seat rollers, re-tension springs, and run the door through 3–5 cycles to confirm it tracks clean. Most off-track calls finish in 60–90 minutes.

When the panel is dented If only the bottom one or two panels are damaged we can replace those sections instead of the whole door — a fraction of a full replacement. Works on Clopay, Garaga, Steel-Craft and Richards-Wilcox doors less than 10 years old. Older doors usually need a full replacement because matching panels are discontinued.
